5x7 inches | oil on panel | October, 2026
Forest interiors are notoriously tricky subjects— you have to be sure from the get-go what your plan is and stick with it through all the slo-motion-disco-light spots of sunlight that track across everything in your field of view. They’re particularly nice subjects as the leaves start to thin, and through the winter, especially at the end of the day. This is because the sun finally can penetrate through to the deepest parts of the woods and hit the tree trunks that sit in shade all through the summer months.
This painting is sold in a handmade, custom frame, made of quarter sawn oak by Dard Hunter Studios in Ohio. Since these frames are individually hand-built, the grain of your frame will be unique, and will vary from the one pictured. The painting will ship including the page of accompanying field notes from the painting expedition, as well as the color compositional sketch that I made, both of which are part of my process for engaging with a place and developing a painting.
