Otter Cliffs, Acadia
Oil on linen | 12x16 | 2024
I’ve painted this view of Otter Cliffs in Acadia, several times. On this occasion, I found a spot that’s nestled under an overhanging tree root that’s been carved out by the force of the waves at high tide. I love the forms of the round boulders on Boulder Beach, and it’s an amazing experience to paint the forms of those boulders while listening to the sounds of the same waves that have worn them down over the course of thousands of years. It’s part of what I love about the process of plein air painting, that when you’re working on a painting out in nature, you’re subject to the same natural forces that created the scene you’re looking at— the wind and rain and snow, and the movement of the ocean or a river.
This painting is framed in a solid oak frame hand-made by Dard Hunter Studios in Ohio.
