Carter Notch

Carter Notch, a view from Jackson

On this iteration of this painting I enjoyed trying to get a solid sense of form amidst the rapidly changing light at sunset. Once I get a basic composition that I like, I’ll dive into a larger painting of this subject.

I’m back up in Jackson, NH, for a little while working on some winter plein air studies to use as reference for some studio paintings I’m planning. On this trip up I discovered this beautiful view of Carter Notch, and have spent some time exploring the fields in this valley looking up towards the notch in the evening. I’m still working out the blog format for this hosting platform, so thanks for bearing with me as I navigate it!

Carter Notch, View with a Brook

A second study of this scene, this time with a brook in the foreground. I love the subtle ways the edges of brooks form in the wintertime— they have all these little curves and overhangs. This scene also definitely warrants a second look, maybe on a clear day.
